29 Nov Your garden can reduce stress levels and increase your energy
In a world that sometimes can feel a little unrelenting and which continues to demand more and more from us, it’s important that we have a place to relax and unwind. We think that place is your garden!
If you are lucky enough to live in a home that has a garden or green space, a sense of tranquillity is easier to obtain than you may realise – time spent in your garden can enhance your physical and mental health.
Physical activity
It’s no secret that physical activity reduces the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, but many of us simply struggle to find the time to fit regular workouts into our busy schedules.
Gardening is one of the greatest physical workouts anybody can do with every single time spent in the garden, even simply taking a leisurely stroll and watering the plants, burning calories and calming the nerves.
What’s more, gardening tends to be a full-body workout that ensures every muscle is flexed and employed.
Think:
- Pushing a lawn mower.
- Up and down weeding.
- Walking up and down.
- Pushing a wheelbarrow.
Exposure to bacteria
We’re pre-conditioned to fear and avoid bacteria at all costs – after all, it’s a primary contributor to head colds. Surely, however, this is a reason to increase our exposure to the good bacteria that can be found in the soil. Doing so will enhance our natural immunity against foreign bodies and ensure that we can spend more time in our gardens, and less time blowing our noses under a pile of blankets!
Vitamin D exposure
Spending time outdoors provides the chance to enjoy the sun’s rays which come with a whole host of health benefits. The sun fills our bodies with Vitamin D, which does us the world of the good. Next time you see your pet basking in the sun, take a leaf out of their book – cats and dogs fully understand how great they feel when they allow their bodies to flood with Vitamin D! But don’t go overboard and get burnt!
