11 Feb TURN EVERYDAY KITCHEN SCRAPS INTO GARDEN GOLD
Did you know that there are probably gardening treasures sitting in your kitchen bin right now? The bits and pieces left behind after meals like eggshells, coffee grounds and fruit peels can work wonders for your lawn and garden when put to good use! With just a few simple tweaks, you can turn food scraps into natural helpers that boost your soil, nourish your plants and even keep pests in check.
Eggshells: Natural calcium for tough plants
Crushed eggshells give your soil a gentle dose of calcium, helping keep issues like blossom-end rot at bay (especially for tomatoes and peppers). Scatter them into your beds or mix with compost to let the nutrients break down over time.
Coffee grounds: Boost for soil and plants
Don’t toss out those used coffee grounds! They’re rich in nitrogen, which plants need for strong, green growth. Sprinkle coffee grounds over your soil to improve texture and fertility. As a bonus, they can help keep slugs and snails away from young plants.
Banana peels: Potassium-packed plant food
Banana peels are loaded with the good stuff – mainly potassium and phosphorus, both essential for vibrant roots and blooms. Chop the peels into pieces and bury them near your plants to feed the soil as they break down.
Citrus peels: Gentle pest deterrent
Ants or aphids making a home in your garden? Place bits of citrus peel around your plants to help keep them at bay. As the peels decompose, they also add nutrients back into the soil, giving you a double win.
Onion and garlic skins: Repel pests, naturally
Instead of binning those onion and garlic skins, pop them around your garden beds! Their strong scent is a simple, eco-friendly way to send many common garden pests packing – no harsh chemicals needed.
Vegetable scraps: Compost’s best friend
Most vegetable leftovers like carrot ends, potato skins and leafy bits break down quickly and boost your compost pile. Feeding your compost with kitchen scraps cuts down on landfill waste and rewards your garden with richer, healthier soil.
