A SIMPLE GUIDE TO SUMMER GARDEN CARE

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO SUMMER GARDEN CARE

Warmer days, later sunsets and the start of the festive buzz – summer in is when gardens truly come alive! And with more time spent outside over the holidays, a little early maintenance can go a long way in keeping your outdoor space looking fresh all season long.

Here are a few easy ways to help your garden handle the heat and stay beautiful through summer and beyond.

Keep your garden hydrated
The summer sun works hard, so your plants need a steady watering routine to keep up. Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and make sure the moisture goes straight to the roots where it’s needed. If you can, use a soaker hose or drip irrigation for slow, efficient watering that reaches deep into the soil.

Mulch for cooler, healthier soil
Mulch is one of the simplest ways to lock in moisture and protect your soil during hot months. A layer of organic mulch – even fallen leaves – helps keep the soil cool, reduces weeds and gives your garden beds a neat, finished look.

Prune and tidy as you go
Summer growth can get wild quickly! Light pruning and removing spent flowers keeps your garden neat and encourages fresh new growth. Deadheading also helps redirect a plant’s energy into producing new blooms, keeping your beds colourful for longer.

Feed your plants the right way
Many plants grow actively through summer, so a slow-release fertiliser can give them the steady nutrients they need. Just be mindful not to overdo it – balanced feeding is key to avoiding weak, leggy growth. Each plant has its own needs, so adjust your approach where necessary.

Keep pests in check
The warmer weather also means more insects flying about, so be sure to watch for early signs of damage. Companion planting and natural repellents can help protect your space without harming the helpful pollinators you want to keep around.

Give your lawn some love
Your lawn is the backdrop to everything happening outdoors, from kids playing lawn games to festive gatherings, so be sure to give it some love! Keep your lawn looking its best by mowing regularly, but not too short. Longer grass shades the soil, helps retain moisture and keeps your lawn greener for longer. Aerating the soil can also improve water and nutrient flow when the heat really sets in.

With the busy holidays around the corner, doing small bits of maintenance each week means less scrambling later – and a garden that’s ready for braais, family visits and long days outside.
