Longer days, late sunsets and weekends spent outside – summer’s just about here which means the braai tongs are out, the drinks are on ice and outside is the place to be!
Before you toss out those ashes from your last braai, here’s a little secret – that leftover ash can do more than remind you of a good night. It can actually give your garden a healthy boost! Let’s dig into a few easy ways to turn braai ash into garden gold.
Feed your garden naturally
Ash is loaded with potassium, phosphorus and calcium – nutrients your soil loves. A light sprinkle helps boost growth, strengthen roots and keep your garden thriving through the hot months ahead.
Balance out acidic soil
Many KZN gardens lean on the acidic side, especially after summer rains. The alkaline properties in ash help neutralise acidity and create the ideal environment for your plants and lawn to flourish.
Keep pests away
Ash doesn’t just help plants grow – it keeps the creepy crawlies in check. Its texture deters slugs, snails and other unwanted visitors, and it can even help with certain fungal issues that pop up in humid weather.
How to use ash in your garden
When the braai’s done and the coals are cool, scoop out the clean ash (only from untreated wood), then lightly sprinkle it over your garden beds or lawn and work it into the top layer of soil. You can also add it to your compost heap to enrich the mix, or just dust a little around the base of plants to keep pests away.
Tip: If you wouldn’t braai with it, don’t use it in your garden. Avoid treated or painted wood ash – keep it clean, keep it natural.
