9 Steps for Preparing Your Garden for Spring

As winter fades and the first signs of spring start to appear, it’s time to ready your garden for a vibrant season ahead.

Not sure where to start? Follow these simple steps to become spring-ready:

1. Clean up and clear out: Start by removing debris, fallen leaves and any winter protection coverings. Clearing out old plant remains helps prevent diseases and pests from lingering into spring.

2. Assess and amend soil: Check soil moisture and texture. Amend with organic matter like compost to improve drainage and fertility. This sets the foundation for healthy plant growth.

3. Prune and trim: Trim back dead or overgrown branches on trees, shrubs and perennial plants. Pruning promotes new growth and shapes the plants for the season.

4. Plan your planting: Review your garden layout and plan where to plant new plants or rearrange current ones. Consider companion planting to maximise space and naturally enhance plant health.

5. Test and repair garden tools: Ensure your gardening tools are clean, sharpened and in good working condition. Replace any damaged tools to make garden tasks easier and more efficient.

6. Start seeds indoors: For early blooms, start seeds indoors in trays or pots filled with seed starting mix. Keep them warm and well-lit until they are ready for transplanting outdoors.

7. Prepare garden beds: loosen soil in garden beds to improve aeration. Create furrows or raised beds if needed, ensuring proper drainage and space for plant roots.

8. Monitor for pests: Inspect your garden for signs of disease. Take preventative measures like applying organic pest controls.

9. Plan for watering and mulching: Set up irrigation systems or plan regular watering schedules. Applying mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to welcome spring with a flourishing garden that’s bursting with colour and vitality. Happy gardening!
