WINTER LAWN CARE TIPS

WINTER LAWN CARE TIPS

With winter right around the corner, it’s important to take some time to properly prepare your lawn for the colder and drier months ahead. Here we’ll discuss some common winter lawn problems and offer solutions to keep your lawn healthy all winter long.

DEHYDRATED LAWN

One of the biggest challenges in winter is keeping your lawn hydrated, this is especially true if you live in an area of the country where winter is the dry season. Even in cold weather, your grass needs moisture to thrive as dry conditions can damage both your grass and soil.

To prevent dehydration, water your lawn for about 5 minutes, once or twice a week during winter. Make sure that you water your lawn at the start of the day to help remove frost. Watering in the morning also helps prevent the water from freezing during the chilly evenings.

FROSTY THE GRASS KILLER

Frost can kill your lawn, but that’s not to say it’s guaranteed to kill your lawn! There are measures you can take to help keep your lawn healthy, even if the frost does hit.

Do so by applying a generous layer of compost to your lawn as this is an excellent barrier against frost, and your lawn will be getting some much needed nutrients at the same time.

WINTERGRASS (POA ANNUA)

Wintergrass is a common lawn pest during winter. It’s a light green, finely leafed grass that spreads rapidly in shady and damp areas. Its web-like, shallow root system damages your lawn by choking the grass’ root system.

Small patches of wintergrass can be removed by simply pulling them out from the root. If you happen across large patches of wintergrass, be sure to avoid watering these patches as wintergrass struggles to survive if left without water.

With a little care and lots of attention, your lawn can still thrive even during winter! Follow these winter lawn care tips to help keep your grass healthy, and you’ll reap the rewards come springtime!
