11 Feb EPSOM SALT LAWN CARE
If you’re like us, you had a gran, mom or aunt who told you to bath in Epsom salt, right? Or even worse, as a vile tonic straight down the throat!
Well, there’s method behind this age-old practice – Epsom salt contains magnesium ions which aid in essential bodily functions. Well, the same goes for your garden!
More specifically, it is incredibly beneficial for your lawn!
Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate), contains magnesium, which is an important component of chlorophyll – essential to maintaining that inviting green lushness that begs for a picnic!
This household staple, containing 10% magnesium and 13% sulphur, is a helpful component in:
- Seed germination
- Chlorophyll production
- Improving the absorption of essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur)
- General growth and health
But, it is only needed if you know your lawn is lacking…
When to use Epsom salt on your lawn.
Historically, it was studied for its effectiveness on crops that lacked magnesium. Magnesium deficiency is caused by either mineral imbalances in the soil or the plant itself. This is most common in light, sandy, or acidic soil that is drenched by rainfall or irrigation.
You can use it to boost the magnesium levels in soils that you have tested and found to be deficient – often old, weathered soils with a low pH or soils with a pH above 7 and high in calcium and potassium.
So, how do you use Epsom salt as lawn fertilizer?
Add 2 tablespoons (around 29.5 ml.) to every 3.7 litres of water used on the lawn. If you have a sprinkler system, lightly sprinkle directly on the surface of the grass and allow the system to water into the sod.
Or, when you first plant new seed, using Epsom salt can help replenish the sulphur that is lost in the germination process. Drench the earth with a mixture of Epsom salts and water directly after planting new seeds. One tablespoon of salts for every 4 litres of water should do the trick!
You can then reapply during the growing season to avoid brown patches and to deal with yellow patches. And TA-DA!
Now, you just have to sit back and glow in the grass envy from your neighbours.
However, if your lawn is needing a bit more TLC, a fresh update with quality instant lawn will do the trick. Contact us on office@evangrass.co.za to place an order.
