5 WINTER GRASS MYTHS DEBUNKED

The winter climate can be harsh but it needn’t mean doom and gloom for your garden; we dispel a few myths about KZN’s winter and your lawn:

  • Myth 1: Winter damages lawn, no matter where you live. Not all areas experience a harsh winter – coastal areas tend to have a lawn-friendly climate throughout the year.
  • Myth 2: Any areas that aren’t green mean your grass is dead. While you may not have bright green grass in winter, a shade of purple or brown does not mean your lawn is dead; it simply means that it is dormant.
  • Myth 3: Frost will kill your lawn, there’s nothing you can do about it. Your lawn will only be damaged if frost gets into the root structure of your lawn. Compost is a good barrier to frost.
  • Myth 4: You shouldn’t mow in winter. Mowing your lawn is good for it, but it is important to keep your lawn longer during winter to protect the root structure. Simply ensure that you just cut the tops off.
  • Myth 5: Watering your lawn will cause it to freeze from the roots up. While not altogether untrue, it is all about your watering schedule. Water your lawn daily (when the sun is out early in the morning) for five minutes to gently remove the frost.

TOP WINTER TIP: Compost is a great way to counteract the effects of winter. Aerate your soil with a fork and apply compost to the surface of your lawn. Use the back of a rake to spread the compost evenly across your lawn.

Our chicken litter-based compost, supported with enhancing products, is carefully monitored over time to ensure it is high in Nitrogen and Phosphorus for healthy root development and increased disease resistance.
